A great upgrade to Dodge trucks or any RFE transmission equipped vehicle is the new Smart-Tech OD clutch drum from Sonnax. The extra stress of increasing the power in these vehicles will eventually cause overdrive clutch failure.
While pulling heavy loads there is high risk for overdrive burnup due to the stock transmission’s insufficient clutch capacity and OEM clutches that are too thin. Even small amounts of heat and extra torque will push the thin stock .034", single-sided clutches to the point of burning and distorting the clutch pack stack. Any distortion of the clutch pack takes the clearance out of specification and makes overdrive clutch burnup inevitable.
The Sonnax Smart-Tech® overdrive clutch housing kit, 72960-06K is made with a unique billet aluminum housing, which holds a taller clutch pack and increases OD apply area by 16%. In addition, the clutches contained within this kit are twice as thick as the factory style clutches. This increase in clutch thickness, increases the overall clutch pack steel mass by 28% for increased heat dissipation.
This new kit is the only high-end upgrade that eliminates clutch problems without relying on extreme line pressure increases through valve body or pump modifications.

*To use this kit, you must have the input clutch retainer found in 2007-up transmissions, OEM part number 04799648AB. All 68RFE, 66RFE, 65RFE should have this retainer. For 45RFE and 545RFE 1999-2006 applications, the input clutch retainer must be replaced with 2007-later version. See instructions for retainer identification and verification measurements.
